The directories have specific purposes and generally hold the same types of information for easily locating files. Following are the directories that exist on the major versions of Unix: Directory Description / Root should contain only the directories needed at the top level of the file structure (or that come already installed in it). Unnecessary subdirectories under root can clutter your system, making administration more difficult and, depending on the system, filling up the space allocated for /. bin Usually contains binary (executable) files critical for system use, and often contains essential system programs, such as vi (for editing files), passwd (for changing passwords), and sh (the Bourne shell). boot Contains files for booting the system.
